To use a power of attorney made in Dubai in India, the document is drafted for the Indian purpose, signed, and attested by the Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate General of India in Dubai. Indian citizens can sign it before the consular officer. What else is needed depends on the person, the document and the office in India.
What do the Indian Embassy and Consulate do?
The Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General of India in Dubai attest powers of attorney and similar documents executed by Indian citizens in the UAE. The Embassy’s published guidance says the document is signed in front of the consular officer, who checks your identity from your passport.
How do you make a power of attorney in Dubai for use in India?
- Decide the powers. Write down exactly what your attorney in India must do, such as collect a payment, deal with a bank or sell a property. A special POA is usually easier for Indian offices to accept than a broad one.
- Draft the document. Prepare the wording in English, with the full names, passport details and addresses of you and your attorney. Ask the office in India that will use it whether it wants particular wording.
- Gather what the Embassy asks for. The Embassy’s guidance lists the original document with a duplicate copy, your original passport, a photocopy of the first five pages and the page with your current residence visa, and a recent passport-size photograph fixed on the front page.
- Sign before the consular officer. Personal presence with your original passport is compulsory. The Embassy’s page says this service is given the same day, but appointments and notices change, so check the current instructions of the Consulate General in Dubai first.
- Send the original to your attorney. Most Indian offices ask for the original, not a scan. Courier it to your attorney and keep a copy.
- Check what the Indian office needs next. Some offices, especially for property, may ask for stamping or registration under Indian rules. Confirm with the office or an Indian lawyer before you rely on the document.
What if you do not sign at the Embassy?
Some people sign before a UAE notary instead. In that case the UAE attestation steps come first, and the Embassy’s guidance says documents issued by UAE organisations need UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation before they are presented. If the person signing is not an Indian citizen, the steps are different. Ask us or the Embassy before you start so you do not repeat work. Should you get help with the draft?
A wrong detail can mean signing again at the consulate. We prepare the draft and the supporting documents so your appointment goes smoothly, and you still sign in person. See our Special Power of Attorney and Power of Attorney attestation services.
